Student family arrival — what do I do before fingerprints?
An SLF visa holder first needs the stay authorization recorded at Extranjería. Check that record before attending the TIE appointment.
Can I go straight from my SLF visa to fingerprints?
No. The official ICP notice requires student-family SLF holders to have the stay authorization recorded by the corresponding Extranjería first.
Contact that office for the recording step; the visa alone is not the recorded authorization.
Does every family member need a TIE?
A stay exceeding six months normally requires a personal TIE request.
ICP does not issue a card for an associated authorization of six months or less, or with fewer than 30 days of validity remaining.
Check each person’s own dates.
First card versus renewal
You do not have an old TIE for a first card; the old-card requirement applies when there was a previous card.
If your address changed, ICP asks for a padrón issued within three months. Do not require that address-change item from everyone.
One-month clock
Article 54.9 sets one month from a domestic grant when permission exceeds six months.
For visa/entry cases, use the applicable entry or effective date under Article 209 and the ICP notice; do not calculate every case from the visa issue date.
Fees and receipt
Generate the current card fee through official 790-012 and keep the complete paid form.
The fingerprint receipt is the card-production proof; the Extranjería recording and first card are separate steps.
What to do
Complete the SLF record first, then your own eligible card request.
Bring
- Completed EX-17
- Original valid passport/identity document
- Complete paid 790-012 form and proof
- Recent 32×26 mm white-background photograph
- Approval decision if provided; visa and entry proof when applicable
- Minor: legal representative and family/guardianship proof
Steps
- Keep the issued visa, passport and dated entry evidence.
- SLF: contact the corresponding Extranjería to have the stay authorization recorded before card issuance.
- Check your recorded category, expiry and the applicable one-month entry/grant/effect clock.
- Book your own appointment through official ICP in your residence province.
- Attend personally with the first-card packet; keep the fingerprint receipt for collection.
Basis
Article 54.9 governs the domestic TIE request; Article 209.1 and the current ICP SLF notice govern entry/card duties and recording before issuance.
