Spanish family residence status — what does waiting mean?
Understand your pending initial Spanish-family authorization, rather than the later consular visa or card production.
Does waiting for two months mean approval?
No. Article 97.6 sets two months and negative silence.
Usually the clock starts at filing; if both were abroad, at Extranjería’s receipt of the consulate’s communication.
Check case status and your formal notices.
Can you work while waiting?
For a domestic 97.1(c) application, provisional residence and work begin when it is admitted, at working age.
Exception: a prior same-type refusal or inadmission on substantially identical facts.
Filing alone is insufficient; refusal ends provisional work.
Proof of provisional work
The start-of-processing communication must state that you are provisionally authorized to work (97.5).
The rule concerns domestic 97.1(c), not an overseas visa request. If employed, immediately inform your employer of the notified outcome.
Read the formal notification
Email or SMS is an alert, not the decision.
For electronic notification that you chose or must use, access serves it; after 10 calendar days without access it is treated as rejected notification (Law 39/2015, 43).
Supplements and negative outcomes
A Spanish-family supplement sets a deadline no greater than 15 days under 97.6; failure to respond can lead to withdrawal and archive.
Negative silence does not grant residence. Check the actual file and use the remedy appropriate to that act; a later decision can still be notified.
Approval: take the correct next step
Domestic application: personally request TIE within one month of grant notification (97.7).
Spanish relative in Spain, you abroad: apply for the visa within one month of notification to that relative (41.2). Both abroad: follow the consular file (41.3).
After entry, request TIE within one month (97.7).
What to do
Separate filing, admission and the final decision; keep the notice proving each stage.

Basis
97.5: admission starts provisional work; refusal stops it. 97.6: two-month negative silence, consular communication clock where applicable. Law 39/2015, 43: access or 10-day rejection of e-notice.
