Self-employed renewal — what cuenta propia requires

The self-employed residence renewal uses a different checklist and evidence standard than employed workers.

What makes self-employed renewal different?

Self-employed renewals (cuenta propia) require tax returns, Social Security payments, and proof of ongoing business activity — not a work contract.

The procedure sheet is Hoja H_15, separate from the employed worker sheet (H_13).

Key evidence: IRPF returns, Social Security contribution receipts (RETA), and proof that the business remains active.

Which form and fee do I need?

File with EX-00 (general renewal form) plus Tasa 790-052.

If your business changed significantly (new activity, different province), compare with a modification — not a simple renewal.

What to do

Gather tax and Social Security evidence before filing.

Bring

  • IRPF tax returns (full period)
  • RETA contribution certificates
  • Proof of business activity (invoices, contracts, census)
  • Tasa 790-052 receipt
  • Valid passport
  • Current TIE card

Steps

  1. Download Hoja H_15 from Migraciones
  2. Prepare IRPF returns for the authorization period
  3. Get RETA contribution certificates from Seguridad Social
  4. Pay Tasa 790-052
  5. File via Mercurio or presencial

RD 1155/2024 arts. 109-110 set the renewal conditions for self-employed authorizations; tax returns and Social Security compliance replace the employer contract requirement.

What if my business had a bad year?

Low income alone does not block renewal, but you must show the business remained active and you met tax obligations.

Zero IRPF returns or gaps in RETA payments trigger review.
