Check renewal status — what each result means

Where to check, what each status code means, and when the 3-month clock triggers silencio positivo.

Where do I check status?

The Extranjería status page at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es.
Enter your NIE and date of birth, or use your Cl@ve to access the full file view.

What does en trámite mean?

Your file is registered and being processed. No action from you until the status changes or you receive a requerimiento (document request).

When does silencio positivo apply?

For most temporary residence renewals (work, family, non-lucrative, arraigo), if 3 months pass from filing with no express decision, the renewal is deemed approved by positive silence.
Exception: student stay extension (prórroga) has a 1-month deadline and negative silence — no decision means denied, not approved.
Always verify no denial was sent before acting on positive silence.

Conclusion

Your file has one of four states: processing, approved, archived or denied. After the legal resolution deadline with no express decision, administrative silence applies — but the type of silence depends on your route.

Where to check

Two methods:
1. Public query — sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es → Extranjería procedures → enter NIE + date of birth. Returns basic status.
2. Mercurio authenticated — log in with Cl@ve or digital certificate to see the full file, including uploaded documents and any requerimiento.

Status codes explained

En trámite — file registered, processing. No action needed from you unless a requerimiento arrives.
Resolución favorable — approved. You have 1 month to request the new TIE card appointment.
Archivado — filed away without decision. Usually means you missed a document request deadline. You can re-file or appeal depending on the reason.
Resolución desfavorable / denegado — denied. You have appeal rights (see denied guide).

Resolution deadlines by route

Work, non-lucrative, family, arraigo: 3-month resolution period. Positive silence (silencio positivo) — no express decision within 3 months means deemed approved.
Student stay extension (prórroga): 1-month resolution period. Negative silence (silencio negativo) — no express decision means deemed denied.
Long-term card renewal: 3-month period, positive silence.
The clock starts from the filing date. Requerimiento periods pause the clock.

Notification methods

Decisions are notified by:
• Postal letter to the address in your file.
• Electronic notification via DEHú if you opted in or are represented by a lawyer.
• Online status update on the query page.
Keep your address current. A returned notification letter does not invalidate the decision.

What to do

Check regularly but do not panic at en trámite. The 3-month rule is your backstop.

Bring

  • Filing date recorded
  • Query page bookmarked
  • NIE and date of birth ready
  • Address in file is current
  • Requerimiento deadline tracked if received
  • Card appointment booked within 1 month of approval

Steps

  1. After filing, wait at least 2 weeks before checking.
  2. Check status at the Extranjería query page with your NIE.
  3. If en trámite persists past 3 months, verify whether positive silence applies.
  4. If a requerimiento appears, respond within 10 working days.
  5. If resolución favorable, book the card appointment within 1 month.
  6. If archivado or denied, read the specific guide for next steps.

Art. 80 establishes a 3-month resolution period and positive silence for work renewals. Arts. 64, 71 and 132 apply equivalent rules to their respective routes. The sede query page is the public-facing status interface.

How often should I check?

Once every 2-3 weeks is reasonable. Checking daily does not speed up the process.

Can my lawyer check for me?

Yes. If represented, the lawyer receives electronic notifications via DEHú and can check the file status with their certificate.

What if the status page shows no information?

This sometimes happens with very recent filings or postal submissions. If your filing receipt is valid, the file exists — the system may take days to register it.
