PROVINCE CHANGE

Renewal after moving to a different province

Changed address to another province? Your renewal file goes to the new province, but timing and documents need attention.

Where do I file if I moved provinces?

File in the province where you currently live — meaning your current empadronamiento address.

Update your empadronamiento to the new address before filing. The immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) serving your new address handles your case.

If you moved recently, make sure your empadronamiento reflects the new province, not just a new address within the same province.

Does changing province affect my renewal?

The move itself does not affect your authorization. But each province's office may have different appointment systems, processing times, and document requirements.

Check the specific requirements of your new province's Oficina de Extranjería before filing.

What to do

Update empadronamiento to new province before filing.

Steps

  1. Register at your new address (empadronamiento)
  2. Identify the Oficina de Extranjería for your new address
  3. Check the new office's specific requirements
  4. File in the new province

Art. 71 RD 1155/2024: the competent office is determined by the applicant's place of residence (domicilio).
