After Year 10, parents can no longer help with schoolwork

You are still helping your child drill practice problems — but Year 10 homework requires analysis and argumentation. Your familiar approach does not match what is being asked.

Doesn’t drilling work anymore?

Drilling itself is not wrong — Chinese education relies on it, US tech interviews rely on it, your child drills for exams too. It is an effective study method.
But from Year 10, the task type changes. Before: get the right answer. Now: organise an argument. Analyse, Evaluate, Discuss questions are not drilled — they are practised with structure.
Drilling covers knowledge points but not answer structure. Your drilling experience is not wrong — it was designed for a different exam system.

What can parents still do?

Not help with the work — help manage the process.
Ask: what tasks do you have today? Which is most urgent? How do you plan to arrange them?
Not giving answers — helping sort priorities. This is the most valuable help after Year 10.

What to do

Shift from helping with tasks to helping manage tasks.

Bring

  • Child’s task list
  • Priority judgment

Steps

  1. Ask: what tasks today?
  2. Ask: which is most urgent?
  3. Ask: how will you arrange them?
  4. Don’t give answers — help sort priorities.

Tiger Y10-Y11 reports show task type shift from knowledge coverage to analysis/argumentation. Geography teacher explicitly requires command words, PEEL, evaluation. Drilling is an effective knowledge tool but does not address Year 10+ answer structure.

Is drilling still useful?

Yes. Drilling covers knowledge points and fluency.
But Year 10+ marks also depend on answer structure. Drilling + structure practice — both legs.
