After approval — the police station steps

Your authorization is approved. Now the police handle the physical card: pay the fee, give fingerprints, wait for production, track your lote, and pick up.

Is this the same as renewing my residence?

No. Residence renewal extends the authorization at Extranjería. Card renewal is the police step that produces a new physical TIE card after authorization is confirmed.

When do I need card renewal?

After a favorable resolution (temporary residence), when your long-term card expires (every 5 or 10 years), or if your card is lost, stolen or damaged.

Conclusion

The card is a document, not the right itself. Confirm your authorization first, then follow the police card process.

When you need card renewal

Four triggers: (1) after favorable resolution for temporary residence renewal, (2) long-term card 5-year or 10-year expiry, (3) card lost, stolen or damaged, (4) card data error correction. Each trigger starts at the police station, not at Extranjería.

The card process

The main sequence: confirm authorization is valid or approved → prepare EX-17 form + Tasa 790-012 + TIE-spec photo → book fingerprint appointment (toma de huellas) → attend and give fingerprints → wait for card production → track lote number → book pickup appointment or go during pickup hours → collect card in person with passport.

What this topic does not cover

This topic does not cover authorization renewal. If you need to renew your work, student, family, arraigo or non-lucrative residence authorization, go to the residence renewal topic. The card step comes after the authorization decision, not before.

What to do

Confirm authorization status before starting the card process.

Bring

  • Authorization confirmed
  • EX-17 form completed
  • Tasa 790-012 paid
  • TIE-spec photo ready
  • Passport valid and copied
  • Fingerprint appointment booked
  • Lote number tracked
  • Card collected in person

Steps

  1. Confirm your authorization is valid or has been approved.
  2. Prepare EX-17 form, Tasa 790-012 payment and TIE-spec photo.
  3. Book a fingerprint appointment (toma de huellas) at the police station.
  4. Attend the appointment with all documents and give fingerprints.
  5. Track your lote number on TIE Hoy after the appointment.
  6. Book pickup or go during pickup hours when your lote is reached.

Art. 185 regulates TIE card issuance and renewal. The police handle fingerprints and card production. The card documents the authorization — it does not grant it.

Does card expiry cancel my authorization?

No. The card is a document. For temporary residence, the authorization dates matter. For long-term residence, the authorization is permanent regardless of card expiry.

Do I need a new photo every time?

Yes. Each card appointment requires a recent photo meeting TIE specifications: white background, front-facing, no glasses.

How long does card production take?

Typically 30-45 days after fingerprints. Track your lote number to know when your card is ready.
