TIE HoyStudent family extension — is the student’s renewal enough?
No automatic family renewal follows the student’s approval. Check your own expiry and whether the principal is extending or requesting a new authorization.
Does the principal’s extension renew my permit?
Do not treat it as your own extension.
Your stay is linked to the principal, but SEM 3/2025 expressly requires legacy RD 557/2011 dependants to apply for their own extension.
Keep your own expiry and receipt separate.
Is every continuation a prórroga?
No. SEM 3/2025 distinguishes legacy extensions from a new initial authorization for the full remaining course.
When the principal requests that new authorization, the family requests the corresponding Article 56 authorization, not an ordinary EX-02 renewal.
Article 55 extension window
The prórroga procedure permits filing two months before expiry or within three months after, with possible late sanction.
It uses electronic filing, to the original province, and one-month negative silence. Own qualifying timely filing extends the previous permission pending decision.
Legacy dependent evidence
SEM Séptima.2 applies to dependants originally authorized under RD 557/2011.
It refers to Article 56.3 requirements except points 1 and 6; where the original stay was under six months, Cuarta.2 may require criminal-record evidence for the longer stay.
New-regime family permission
Article 56.5 keeps your stay linked to the principal; it does not say a principal-only filing automatically issues your continuation.
Use your own permit dates, EX-00 and the competent authority’s family procedure. Do not wait past your expiry for the student’s decision.
After continuation
The dependent permission still does not authorize work under Article 56.6.
If the principal has ended study stay or changed category, reassess the legal route rather than filing a family extension on the old basis.

- For the Article 55 extension route, file within your applicable window; save your own receipt and the principal’s supporting evidence.
- Monitor your own decision; an approved student extension is supporting evidence, not your family resolution.
