International school in Spain — does the Spanish system still matter?
You think the international diploma covers everything — transferring, university access and homologación each have their own rules.
Can my child’s diploma get them into Spanish university?
Yes, but not automatically. Three routes:
IB Diploma: legally exempt from EBAU (RD 534/2024). Score converts to Spanish 0–10. Strongest path.
A-Levels: via UNEDasiss accreditation (not homologación). No EBAU but requires an application process.
Homologación: formally equates the diploma to Spanish Bachiller, then full EBAU. Slowest — only needed for Spanish official title.
Tiger says ‘no selectividad’ — correct, but ‘no process’ is wrong.
What if we transfer mid-studies to a public school?
Apply to the CCAA education authority.
3º ESO: direct entry, no convalidation needed.
4º ESO+: must complete a full academic year first.
After transfer, Spanish graduation requirements apply — including co-official language courses in bilingual regions.
What to do
Determine the goal: Spanish uni, UK uni, or transfer to public school.
Bring
- Target university/school type
- Current curriculum
- Target CCAA
Steps
- Spanish uni: IB or A-Level + UNEDasiss.
- UK uni: A-Level/IB directly, no Spanish process.
- Transfer: check CCAA language requirements first.
- Start preparing 1 year ahead.
Basis
IB exempt from EBAU by RD 534/2024. A-Level via UNEDasiss, no EBAU but requires application. Homologación is a third path for official Spanish title. Three routes for three goals.
