Family sponsor change — can I still renew?
For ordinary family reunification with a non-EU resident sponsor. Spanish-citizen, EU and student families must use their own routes.
Does a sponsor problem automatically block renewal?
No. Read the current permit position and Article 71 conditions.
Job loss alone is not an automatic refusal rule.
For specified children, wards or parents, Article 71.2 permits an eligible substitute sponsor.
Other permits? First choose the correct family route.
What if the relationship ended?
Check Article 69 for breakup: normally three years of relationship and at least one year living together in Spain.
A shorter period can qualify if you were awarded custody of your common children.
Each event has its own six-month filing clock below; Article 70 concerns sponsoring your own relatives.
Who can substitute under Article 71.2?
For descendants, minors under guardianship or parents, the sponsor’s resident spouse/partner can request renewal if in the same family unit and the original sponsor no longer qualifies.
For descendants or wards, their other resident parent/guardian can also do so, whether in the same unit or not.
Independent residence is a different test
A spouse/partner can qualify after at least one year of family authorization and qualifying own funds, employment or self-employment (69.1).
Adult children, Blue Card family and parents have their own grounds. Do not use the initial family-income test as the ordinary renewal test.
Family events have their own clocks
Breakup under 69.2(a): prove a three-year relationship and at least one year living together in Spain, or a shorter period if awarded custody of your common children.
Apply within six months after notice admitting the annulment/divorce/legal-separation claim, or notice of the registered-partnership cancellation decision.
Qualifying violence/victim grounds under 69.2(b): six months from notification of the required reports or documents, regardless of residence/cohabitation length.
Sponsor’s death under 69.2(c): six months from death; you must already have lived in Spain meeting the requirements before death, regardless of residence/cohabitation length.
If the original sponsor did not change
Use ordinary renewal under Article 71, including the current permissions and continuing relationship.
A new job, reduced income or changed address does not by itself convert the application into independence; identify the actual legal change first.
What to do
Match the change to renewal, substitute sponsor or independence.
