Renewal after job change, gap, or unemployment

Changed employer, lost your job, or had a gap in Social Security? Your renewal still depends on showing sufficient means.

Can I renew if I changed jobs or was unemployed?

Yes, but you must show you have sufficient means to support yourself. A job change alone does not block renewal — a gap in Social Security contributions or current unemployment makes the case harder.

The key evidence is your Vida Laboral (employment history) and current contract or proof of active job search.

If you switched from employed to self-employed (or vice versa), compare with a modification — the route type may have changed.

What if I'm currently unemployed?

Being registered as job-seeker (demandante de empleo) and receiving unemployment benefits (prestación) counts as sufficient means.

No benefits and no contract is the hardest scenario. You may need to show savings, a pending job offer, or family support.

What to do

Document your employment history and current situation before filing.

Bring

  • Vida Laboral (informe de vida laboral)
  • Current work contract or SEPE registration
  • Payslips or benefit statements (last 6 months)
  • Tax returns if self-employed periods

Steps

  1. Download your Vida Laboral from Seguridad Social
  2. Gather current contract or unemployment registration (SEPE)
  3. If gap exists, prepare explanation and evidence of means
  4. Check if route type changed (empleado → autónomo = possible modification)

Art. 71.2 RD 1155/2024: renewal requires proof of sufficient means; employer-route holders must show continued activity or valid reason for gaps.

Does a short gap (1-2 months) matter?

Short gaps are common and usually not a problem if you can show continuous overall activity.

Gaps over 3 months without explanation may trigger additional scrutiny.
