Healthcare while waiting for a TIE in Spain
A pending TIE card does not itself remove residence or healthcare entitlement. Use proof of your underlying status and check the regional process.
Can I use public healthcare while I am waiting for my TIE?
Yes, if your underlying healthcare entitlement is still valid. A pending TIE does not by itself cancel your residence status or recognised healthcare access.
What proof can I show if I do not have my TIE card yet?
Show the receipt for your application and documents that prove the circumstances on which your entitlement is based. Your regional health service can confirm its procedure.
What to do
Use proof of underlying entitlement; do not treat a pending TIE as loss of rights.
Steps
- Keep the TIE application receipt
- Gather residence or registration proof
- Check healthcare entitlement
- Contact your regional health service
- Request written instructions if needed
Basis
Law 16/2003, Articles 3 and 3 ter: access follows recognised entitlement, not physical delivery of a TIE.
More questions
Can I apply for a health card with my TIE application receipt?
It depends on the autonomous community and on your underlying healthcare entitlement. Bring your fingerprints or renewal receipt, padrón certificate and proof of Social Security registration if you have it.
What should I do if the health centre refuses my receipt?
Ask them to review the applicable regional procedure and request a written response. Also contact the INSS if your access is based on Social Security contributions or registration.
Can I go to A&E while I am waiting for my TIE?
Yes. Emergency care should not wait until your card is issued. Take identification and any receipt you have, then ask how to regularise routine healthcare afterwards.
Will I lose my family doctor when I renew my TIE?
Not simply because you renew your TIE, provided your healthcare entitlement remains valid. Check that your address and Social Security details are up to date with your regional health service.
