Healthcare for children in Spain

Understand your child’s healthcare rights, registration steps and care options in Spain.

Do children get free public healthcare in Spain?

Yes. Children have protected access to public healthcare. Register your child with your regional health service for routine care.

Can my child see a doctor without a TIE?

Yes, where care is needed. A TIE is not the requirement that determines a child's healthcare protection. Bring the child's identification and proof of address if you have it.

What to do

Register the child with the regional health service; do not wait for a TIE.

Steps

  1. Gather the child’s ID
  2. Keep address proof if available
  3. Contact the regional health service
  4. Request a health centre and paediatrician
  5. Keep the registration receipt

Royal Decree-law 7/2018, Article 3 ter of Law 16/2003 protects minors’ healthcare access.

Where do I apply for my child's health card?

Apply through your local health centre or your autonomous community's health service. Bring the child's identification, padrón certificate and any available family documents.

Do I need to be registered on the padrón to access paediatric care?

Being registered on the padrón usually makes routine registration and health-centre assignment easier. If you do not have it yet, ask about your region's temporary route and do not delay urgent care.

Can I take my child to A&E without a health card?

Yes. In an emergency, go to A&E even if you do not have a health card. Afterwards, complete healthcare registration to ensure regular paediatric follow-up.

Does my child's health card work in another autonomous community?

Emergency care is covered throughout Spain's National Health System. However, routine paediatric care or changing doctors may require you to arrange a transfer in the new autonomous community.
